Submission Guidelines

Res Practica welcomes submissions in French and English. Please read the guidelines below before submitting, and consult our policies on Peer Review, Open Access and Licensing, and Publication Ethics.

Types of submissions

Research articles (up to 9,000 words) offering substantive engagement with normative challenges arising in the context of social practices and public policies. Research articles are reviewed by at least two reviewers.

Review articles (5,000–9,000 words) offering an extensive overview of recent debates or literatures relevant to the journal’s scope. We particularly welcome French-language surveys of recent debates in Anglophone philosophy, and English-language surveys of recent debates in Francophone philosophy. Review articles are reviewed by at least one reviewer.

Critical responses (up to 3,000 words) to articles recently published in Res Practica, in Les Ateliers de l’éthique / The Ethics Forum, or elsewhere. Critical responses are reviewed by at least one reviewer.

Case discussions and responses (up to 3,000 words). Case discussions describe and discuss real-world problems concerning social practices or public policy, and identify normative questions or approaches suitable for engaging with them. Accepted case discussions are published on the journal’s website together with an invitation for responses, themselves up to 3,000 words. Case discussions and responses are reviewed by at least one reviewer.

Book reviews (1,000–2,000 words). We particularly welcome French-language reviews of monographs written in English, and English-language reviews of monographs written in French. Please write to the editorial team if you are interested in reviewing a recently published monograph. Book reviews are assessed by at least one member of the editorial board. Longer reviews may be considered in exceptional cases.

All word counts include references and notes. All submissions except book reviews are subject to double-anonymous peer review.

Preparing your manuscript

Manuscripts should be submitted in Word format (.doc or .docx).

The text should be single-spaced and set in a 12-point font. Use italics rather than underlining, except for URLs. Figures, tables, and illustrations should be placed at the appropriate points within the text, not gathered at the end.

Each manuscript must be accompanied by:

  • an abstract of no more than 200 words, in the language of the manuscript;
  • up to ten keywords, in the language of the manuscript.

Authors are welcome to provide an abstract and keywords in both French and English at the time of submission, but this is not required. If a manuscript is accepted, the editorial team will request a translated abstract and keywords, and will assist authors who need it.

A running head, biographical note, and ORCID identifier are not required at the time of submission; they will be requested if the manuscript is accepted.

Anonymisation

Manuscripts must be anonymised before submission. Please remove your name and affiliation from the manuscript, and refer to your own published work in the third person, as you would to any other author’s. Please also check the document properties in Word, which often retain the author’s name even after it has been removed from the text.

References and notes

Res Practica follows the Chicago author-date style for references. Notes should be placed as endnotes, not as footnotes.

Where possible, please provide URLs or DOIs for the works cited.

Submission checklist

Before submitting, please confirm that:

  • the submission file is in Word format;
  • the manuscript has not been previously published and is not under consideration by another journal — if it is, please explain in your covering message;
  • the manuscript falls within the word limits for its category;
  • an abstract of no more than 200 words and up to ten keywords are provided;
  • references follow Chicago author-date style, and notes appear as endnotes;
  • URLs or DOIs have been provided where possible;
  • the manuscript has been anonymised, including the document properties;
  • the text is single-spaced, in 12-point font, with figures and tables placed within the text.

Manuscripts should be sent by email to info@respractica.com, pending the launch of the journal’s online submission portal.

Please indicate in your message the category under which you are submitting, and include any information the editorial team should be aware of — including, where applicable, any use of generative artificial intelligence in the preparation of the manuscript, as set out in our Publication Ethics policy.
